Mission: To promote human rights through the development of ecological and social projects in communities with limited financial resources and/or significant negative environmental impact. Using educational programs, workshops and trainings, CECAM identifies issues that affect a community and works with them to develop innovative solutions that both protect the environment and improve quality of life, encouraging equitable and just sustainable development.

Year Founded: 1997

Preferred method of contact: Email for everyday communications and Skype for more detailed communications. Milli from Sustainable Bolivia is the liaison and English interpreter.

Project information:

Note that Sustainable Bolivia is a volunteer placement organization that is facilitating the partnership between Nourish and CECAM. Nourish also works through Sustainable Bolivia with another of its partners, Infante.

  • Availability for Summer 2017: Sustainable Bolivia may have additional capacity to facilitate a second partnership between an additional Nourish Chapter and another of its community partner organizations in Summer 2017.
  • Future project ideas: Interns may be involved with a long-term project of CECAM’s called BiciCafe – a cafe powered by bicycle machines selling fresh juice and other sustainable treats.
  • Skills:
    • Need at least one intern who speaks intermediate-advanced Spanish. CECAM staff Freddy and Rosio don’t speak English.
    • Prefer older, mature students.
  • Accommodations: Interns have the option to stay in the Sustainable Bolivia office in Cochabamba or with homestays. See info on accommodations hereCosts vary by living situation.
  • Additional info:
    • Sustainable Bolivia offers interns language classes in Spanish or Quechua during their stay
    • Sustainable Bolivia offers a monthly mini-grant which interns can apply for to bolster their budget for the project.

Partnership History:

  • Summer 2016
    • Chapters: Boston University and Boston College
    • Project: Our partner organization, CECAM Bolivia, has developed relationships with local schools and has donated “bicimaquinas,” or bike-powered machines, to these schools, which they can use to make their own soap. The Project will focus on teaching students in the local schools about hygiene, sanitation, and the environment.

    • Project: Helped design and develop “bicimaquinas” or bicycle machines to support individual income generation. Also helped initiate a project for women’s health curriculum.
