Project information:

  • Number of groups: 2 Nourish groups at different times in the summer
  • Skills: CCUg would like to take part in the selection of project interns to ensure skills match with project needs
  • Reported program costs to students:

      • Accommodations: 720,000 Ugandan shillings (around $213) per student for 6 weeks
      • Transport: 200,000 UGx ($60) per student for 6 weeks
      • Admin costs: 200,000 UGx ($60) per student for 6 weeks
    • Average total costs (reported by interns – includes airfare, accommodations, food, vaccinations, misc.): $2,125
    • Range of reported intern total costs: $1,800-$2,700
  • Recommendations: Make sure Interns bring the right equipment, like gloves (based on instructions from CCUg before arrival in Uganda)

Partnership History:

  • Summer 2016
    • Chapters: Columbia University and Juniata College
    • Project: Covered topics from nutrition and balanced diets to sexually transmitted diseases. Worked with CCUg’s Group Savings Program, which aims to encourage women entrepreneurs to save and invest their money in running viable business. Implementation of this program was meant to enable women to become financially independent. Worked with female farmers to improve farming practices and distribute better seed varieties to improve productivity.

  • Summer 2015
    • Chapters: Columbia University, Duke University, Juniata College, and Penn State
    • Project: Constructed 100 dish drying racks. Worked on primary and secondary education. Delivered, installed, and trained families on how to use mosquito nets.
    • Secondary Project Funded: Provided funding for a Community Resource Center that will provide computer skills and literacy training to out of school and un-employed youth in the community.
    • Investment: $5,250
    • Project team: 5 interns
  • Summer 2014
    • Chapters: Duke, Juniata and Penn State
    • Project: Trained women in chicken-rearing and turned that into a small scale business. Constructed pit latrines to promote health and sanitation.
    • Investment: $4,400
    • Project team: 8 interns
